EXCERPT:

Only fifteen minutes since I’d entered the halls of Perdido High School and already the beady eye of authority was upon me. I hadn’t even done anything wrong.

Yet.

“Travis!” Ms. Valenzuela called out to me from the door of the guidance office. Although she was getting old, maybe into her early forties, she hadn’t let herself go. She had great legs, which were hidden today by her lime green pants.

“Yo.” I loped over and unleashed a grin that combined sincere remorse for my failings with my irresistible charm.

Find Inspiration In This Feel Good Chick-Lit Novel For Less Than $4 – April 21

Some people survive life’s blows whilst others become “mad, bad or sad”. Swimming Upstream is the story of a survivor, Lizzie, whose life takes a series of dramatic twists after she steps into the path of an oncoming car.

Readers who like Eat, Pray, Love will like SWIMMING UPSTREAM.

Ms. Mancini’s inspiration for Swimming Upstream came from a painful relationship breakup many years ago when issues from her own past came rearing up to haunt her. She then became interested in the question as to why some people survive life’s challenges whilst others go under in one way or another. British actress Kate Beckinsale would play Lizzie.

This is available for $3.99 on April 21st.

EXCERPT:

It was as if we were having two different conversations. Which wasn’t that surprising after all, as we were clearly having two entirely different experiences of breaking up. His was soft, cushioned; Jude and his friends had broken his fall. Mine was cold, empty and bereft. I was freefalling in space and time, with nobody standing by to stop me hurtling headlong into obscurity.

RUTH MANCINI

I was born in South London and educated in Cambridge and London. I now live with my husband and two children in Oxfordshire. I’m a legal-aid lawyer and writer. My eldest child has a severe learning disability and so juggling working as a lawyer, writing and caring for my sons is a challenge to say the least! I think it’s true to say that I have had my fair share of loss, trauma and difficulties over the years and it has got me interested in the subject of resilience and what it is that enables some people to survive life’s challenges whilst others become “mad, bad or sad”. That’s the underlying theme of my novel.

MY FAVORITE FOOD: I love wine, cheese and reading in bed! I also love good movies.

MY FAVORITE BOOK: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

MY FAVORITE MOVIE: Thelma and Louise. I love American movies generally and am fascinated with the American landscape and countryside as well as the people. But I also love the two women’s fight against injustice and male chauvinism. Right on sisters!.

ORIGINS is a young adult medical thriller with high action that is sure to make the pages fly!

STEVEN TANDBERG

Tucked deep within my brain and heart grew a desire to write. The path to become a physician kept that desire at bay while I studied and spent many sleepless nights at the hospital. Eventually, it could not be contained any more and out came Origins (The Infusion Series) and Daydreaming Davey, my first novel and children’s book. Now, my time is divided between my family, work, and late night writing sessions. Writing lets me explore my experiences in medicine and share them with everyone who will listen. I live with my supporting wife and kids in the Land of Enchantment.

Favorite food: Pad Thai vs. Buffalo Wings

Favorite place to write: The bedroom (I know, a little odd)

Favorite music: Currently I can’t get enough of Imagine Dragons

Be Moved By This Heartbreaking Memoir for less than $1- April 20

LEAVING THE HALL LIGHT ON is a moving story of a mother’s struggle to help her bipolar son and coping with his death. Madeline describes her life when her son Paul is diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a psychotic break at 19. She goes on to talk about life with Paul and finding meaning in her life after his suicide.

Readers of A Year of Magical Thinking , The Liars’ Club, and The Glass Castle will appreciate LEAVING THE HALL LIGHT ON.

Ms. Sharples came about writing this book from her experiences with audience members from her talks. She wanted to share her story with others as a way to erase the stigma of mental illness and to help others cope with the suicide of a loved one.

This will be available on April 20 for $0.99.

EXCERPT:

One night right before the first Thanksgiving after Paul’s death, Sherry left a basket on my doorstep. Her note said that she dreaded the holidays after her mother died, so she gathered—“harvested” was the word she used—a few things to ease the holiday season for me. As I read her note and looked through the basket, I cried. Among the items inside was a book about coping with the loss of a love. This one was in poetry—she knew I wrote poetry—and the first book I was able to concentrate on enough to read through after Paul died. She also included a journal, a sweet smelling candle, a box of absolutely delicious chocolate covered graham crackers, and a smooth gray stone. This stone became my biggest comfort. Just large enough to fit in the palm of my hand, it feels the perfect size when I close my hand around it. One edge is round and the other is triangular. One side is plain; the other has the word “son” carved into it. My little stone became my night-time friend. I soon got into the habit of going to bed with it. Once settled, I held it on my chest just between my breasts. I liked its coldness on my aching heart. It helped me relax. Holding it in my hand and reading the word with my thumb also helped. I carried it around in my pocket for a while. I wanted to feel that it was there for me. Then, I began to wonder about my own sanity. Was I trying to exchange my son for a stone? When I got more together and began to feel better, I let go of it and let it rest on another item from that basket—a little, silk-covered, sachet pillow that smells like lavender. It has hand-painted butterflies and the word “heal” printed on the silk. They are still there on my bedside table after all these years.

MADELINE SHARPLES

I worked for most of my professional life as a technical writer and editor, grant writer, and proposal manager. But my love of poetry and creative writing began in grade school. I pursued my writing interests to high school while studying journalism and writing for the high school newspaper, and studied journalism in college. However, I only began to fulfill my dream to be a professional writer later in life. In addition to “Leaving the Hall Light On,” I co-authored “Blue-Collar Women: Trailblazing Women Take on Men-Only Jobs” and co-edited the poetry anthology, “The Great American Poetry Show” Volumes 1 and 2. My poetry also accompanies the work of photographer Paul Blieden in two of his books, “The Emerging Goddess” and “Intimacy.” I live in Manhattan Beach, California, with Bob, my husband of 40 years.

Here’s A Cozy Mystery That Will Have You Guessing For Only $2.99 – April 20

A VIEW TO DIE FOR is a suspenseful mystery with an odd couple for detectives – Jake, an freelance software engineer and a prediliction for McDonalds, and his golden retriever, Fred. Jake comes to his sister’s aide when she is accused of murder in a black widow insurance scam.

Fans of David Rosenfelt Lawrence’s Block Burglar Books and Dean Koontz will enjoy A VIEW TO DIE FOR.

The author, Richard Houston, was inspired to write this novel from his discovery of a cave on his property and watching a tv show about Jesse James and the Golden Circle. He pictures George Clooney as Jake.

This is also available on Nook and Apple.

EXCERPT:

“What do you think, Boy? Did Jesse James really hide his coins here?” This time, Fred answered by running ahead to the cave. It was conceivable that Jesse’s gang had hidden some of their stolen loot along the river. Missouri was a Union state during the civil war, but someone forgot to tell the proud rebels of Truman and the rest of the Ozarks – including the James brothers. The brothers had been raised in Missouri and must have known the Osage River well. After the South lost the war, they returned to Missouri and continued their own private war against the local banks and trains. I figured the link to the James gang made the coins worth far more than the gold they were struck from. If the story could be verified, the coins would be worth a small fortune, maybe enough to kill for.

RICHARD HOUSTON

Richard is working on his third career. His first was as a carpenter and roofer for twenty years while working his way through college. With a BS in Math he spent the next twenty-five years as a successful software engineer by working on the Space Shuttle at both Vandenberg AFB, and Johnson Space Center. He then went on to start Master Mind SofTools where he developed software for fortune 500 companies.

My favorite place to write is my writing desk overlooks Lake of The Ozarks. It’s a great place to watch the boats and birds, but a terrible distraction for writing. Thus, it’s usually only after two am that I get any real work accomplished.

MAINAK DHAR

Mainak Dhar is a cubicle dweller by day and author by night. His first “published” work was a stapled collection of Math solutions and poems (he figured nobody would pay for his poems alone) that he sold to his classmates in Grade 7, and spent the proceeds on ice cream and comics. Mainak was a bestselling author in his native India with titles published by major houses like Penguin and Random House and with one of his novels (Herogiri) being made into a major motion picture. In early 2011, he began to use Amazon to reach international readers through his ebooks and became one of the leading independent authors in the world with more than 100,000 books sold in his first year.
